During the Elizabethan Times it was very different than our lifestyle now. During that time, the plague and many other diseases were spreading around England. For the poor, it was a very hard life, but for the rich, it was everything you could have imagined. William Shakespeare was one of the people who were on both sides.
Queen Elizabeth was the ruler in the Elizabethan period, hence the name “Elizabethan”. She reigned from 1558-1603. She was sometimes called “The Virgin Queen”, “Gloriana” or “Good Queen Bess”.
The poor lived a hard life, surrounded by darkness everywhere during the night, easily catching diseases and being raped or harassed on the streets. Hunger and shelter was a big problem too. 20 pounds took 4 years for them to earn, as we now could have 20 pounds easily. The poor’s houses used to only have a room with soil ground, holes as windows, a small opening at the corner of the roof to let smoke from a fire out. If lucky, you would be able to sleep on a mat. The poor only owned a few objects, such as kitchen utensils.
The rich lived like royals; they had 3 meals a day and had sufficient jobs that could let them live happy long lives. They could afford medicine and professional doctors. They have happy large homes with décor. The rich were like gods in the minds of the poor, it was the best life during the Elizabethan period. Meals, parties and balls would be held continuously.
There are so many thing that changed in the time between the Elizabethan England, to modern life now. For example, we would think landscape and countrysides were breath taking, we would take photos and set it as a wallpaper. but Elizabethans saw it as horrific, anything but beautiful. Not only did our thoughts/perspectives change, even the houses and common jobs changed. A common person home used to be extremely dark, so dark you would hardly see any color. There would be a fire in the middle, but windows were only small holes, and there was only one opening to let a bit of the thick smoke out. The houses were usually small fat cottages, with one room and a dirt floor, it wasn't unusual to find a family of seven or eight in one cottage. In some families, there would be a Yeoman, he owns farms and hires workers. Yeoman's go through the struggle of finding and paying workers, money was limited, and there were less people in the Elizabethan times, making it hard to employ. If you walk through a village, it would stink of excrements, and because they are scared of foreign dangers and getting unhealthy, the excrements could not go to the sea. Now, we have pluming and nice sea views. When you get to the market, you'd see as much people as today, but they usually sell fish. Pastries, sweets and pies are available too but they are pricey.
